Hard at work
Neil in the office
I started my career in a traditional banking role before moving to Standard Life in Edinburgh in my early 20s.
Standard Life presented an opportunity to work in the Newcastle office of their independent financial adviser (IFA) sales division. After three years, I felt I could do a better job than the advisers I was selling Standard Life to. I then had a couple of IFA roles with national firms before being approached to start the Robson Laidler Wealth business.
Robson Laidler, as a firm of accountants, provided an ideal opportunity to advise business owners on their own wealth. This led to developing skill and expertise in advising on pensions, including commercial property purchase.
Having been an experienced user of financial planning software before I joined Robson Laidler, I was keen to embed this as part of our client service offering. I firmly believe the plan is more important than the product, and I have become an expert at cashflow modelling.
The things I love most about my job are seeing clients “get” what’s possible with financial planning, and meeting a lot of interesting people with different backgrounds. I also enjoy developing our team to become the best versions of themselves.
The types of people I most enjoy working with are those who are engaged in their own financial planning process and ask good questions.
